Edward Orato
Every Saturday Edward has a small stall at the local market in Kisumu where he tries to sell his paintings. This is not easy. In high season where tourists eventually pass by he earns around 80 US$ a month. During winther time it is much less. This is not enough for him to feed his family so he has to take small jobs painting houses or drawing signs.
Edward is 33 years old and lives in a small rented house together with his wife and their baby child. He has six brothers and sisters, but he is the only one who has become an artist. After he graduated from school he could not find a job and after a year where he hang around the house, his mother encouraged him to attend the local art school in Kisumu. And though this has never made him a rich man, he is very happy about his decision.
Edward has a very distinct style. His paintings are build up in geometrical patterns and holds recognizable motives. His colours reflects the red soil of Africa.
